Interior design of the Lasagna Mia restaurant

The new restaurant in Ječná Street brings a piece of Italy right to the center of Prague. Not only in the field of gastronomy, but also in the interior and cozy atmosphere. The Restaurant, which offers a wide selection of homemade pasta made from genuine Italian flour and seasonal Mediterranean ingredients. It is located near IP Pavlova Square in the historic Teplotechna building. The brutalist building from the 1980s comes from the architect Věra Machoninová. At first glance, the building attracts with its distinctive facade, which consists of cladding of blue metal plates. This strong blue color also became part of the new interior design as respect to the old building and to generate a transition. The original purpose of the construction was recently replaced mainly by office use. However, there is also an art gallery and now the Lasagna Mia at street level.

The origin of Lasagne

Lasagne is a traditional Italian dish originated in the city of Naples during the middle ages, prepared by layering pasta, béchamel sauce, meat, cheese and vegetables in various variations. Also widely spread through the region of Emilia-Romagna, where every mother keeps her secret recipe for the best lasagna, of course. When topped with grated fresh parmesan cheese and a good glass of pinot noir, a regular lasagna dish on a Friday night is elevated to a gourmet like meal. It is also a designation for the pasta itself, which is used to prepare this dish. This type of pasta has become the inspiration for the decoration of the entire interior, which adds lightness and a moment of surprise.

“Approximately 3,000 pieces of dried pasta sheets look down from the blue-painted ceiling, which matches the color of the original façade, and create an imaginative transition between the interior and the outside world. In the evening lighting, it is also possible to observe an interesting shadow play.“

The interior design

By the entrance cookbooks, typical Italian ingredients, fresh herbs and good wines are displayed in a solitaire bespoke shelf. The dining area is dominated by a long colored bench. Also a variation of Ton chairs and special wooden layered rectangular tables, so you can easily move them. The same detail is evident at the order counter and on the decor at the bottom of the partition in front of the professional kitchen, which is separated at eye level by clear glass. This gives customers the opportunity to look under the hood of local chefs and watch them at work.

The ventilation system and lighting were modified with respect to the original historic building. As result the clearance increased and the room became optically more open. The concrete beams and columns got a fresh white-gray layer to highlight the detail of the structure. The surrounding walls are also in bright tones, however, they revive the signs in Italian and pop-art rendition of a bust of David by Michelangelo Buonarroti with the label „Lasagne is the food of the gods“.
